Consider that two hundred years ago, it took months to traverse our country by foot, on horse or by wagon train. One hundred years ago, it could take weeks by railroad. Fifty years ago, it could take several days by car. Today in a spacecraft, it
takes only a few minutes. These accomplishments are laudable however the industries that collectively made these incredible innovations possible, actually did so openly at the cost of polluting our air, water and environment with toxic chemicals. Fifty years ago, few if any kids your age were taught
about the fragile nature of our environment. Today, every child your
age should already be familiar with nature, conservation and the
concept of recycling. Until just a few decades ago, water, air and toxic pollution
was
considered an acceptable cost of modern progress. Today, we're now
reaping
those costs in terms of birth defects, autism, asthma and cancer clusters. Many of you are thankfully, going much further and getting involved much younger on
numerous new projects designed to help us protect our environment. I say thankfully as it's going to take you, the younger generation to change the mindset of those who would continue to put profits and progress ahead of the health and welfare of the millions of others who share our environment. Plainly our generation has failed in this area so like it or not, the onus passes to you.
Before passing the torch, there is a simple way forward to consider that perhaps we can all live with. The premise of responsible spending offers a large number of built in solutions never before sought. Take the first step and become a lifelong Earth Mom member devoted to protecting our beautiful blue planet. It's never to early or late to learn more about how to protect our environment. With every breath you take, decide if you want that air to be clean. With every sip of water you take, decide if you want it chocked full of chemicals, toxins and drug traces. With every bite of food you eat, decide if you want it genetically engineered or laced with antibiotics designed to make animals grow bigger and faster. Collectively, it's going to be up to you and everyone else your age to one day decide what's best for everyone on the planet.
The same technology that brings you video games, smart phones, computers and tablets, can now be used to help you decide to either reward those that would help protect you or help eliminate those that would knowingly poison you. Many commercial advertisements you see on TV are designed to separate you or your parents from their money regardless of the cost to the environment. With very little effort, you can investigate them all on line and offer your parents valuable information when it comes to the types of products and services you wish to be allowed into your household. You don't have to wait until you're an adult to start making a difference.
All this is a lot for a young mind to take in at one sitting. So take be sure to return often to read up on new developments and discuss them with your friends. One or more of them may be helping you lead the community and perhaps even the country one day. Don't be afraid to set your sights high.
