Administration

Compliancy Officer: As you grow, plan to assign an Environmental Compliancy Officer to continually assess and monitor the effectiveness of your policy and overall "Earth Friendliness” of your organization.

Environmental Committee: Create an energy management committee specifically charged with finding ways to save energy in and around your operations while reducing waste wherever possible.

Environmentally Friendly Vendors: Insure your company purchasing agent(s) are fully aware of the Earth Mom Mantra and actively seek out other Eco-Friendly vendors with which to do business.

Follow Up: Speaking of meetings, hold timely meetings where you discuss the effectiveness of past ideas, monitor new progress, examine financial impacts of your mandates, hear new energy savings ideas and implement new policies.

Go Laptop: Laptop computers typically use up to 80 percent less energy than a standard desktop. Providing docking for laptops will save time, money and energy for employees who would otherwise require a separate desk top system. One of the smartest ways to save energy is to turn off your computers, printers, monitors and any other office equipment when not in use, especially overnight and on weekends. This can save as much as $44 per year, per computer.

Review Panel: If large enough, assemble an environmental review panel consisting of equal numbers of managers and workers (consisting of Earth Mom members). Hold monthly meetings with select staff and workers to set goals and monitor the results of your Eco-Friendly efforts. Hold quarterly or annual meetings to review your progress to date and insure everyone involved understands their ongoing responsibilities. If you want to appear large but aren’t, consider implementing this panel for the extra boost it will give your employees, investors and most of all, customers.

Save a Tree: Download an Adobe PDF or compatible print driver. This driver allows you to print and save any incoming bill, receipt, e-mail, etc. to your hard drive without the need for printing (make sure you have good offsite back up for all your data). Instead of printing "Eco-Mandates” for your employees and department heads to print and ready, you can copy and paste various portions any directive and either save or send off via text or e-mail to various company personnel.

Smart Strips: "Smart" power strips are being available that sense the presence or absence of office workers and turn the attached equipment on and off accordingly. Investigate which components can be plugged in without disruption to your continuity.

Suggestion Box: Create an electronic suggestion inbox for receiving relevant information and suggestions to add to your "Green Policy” mandates and broadcast your improvements out for the world to view.

Tech Tools: Trade in your obsolete paper day planners in favor of an electronic appointment book with task tracking software that interfaces with others.

Telecommute: AWhile the HFIC of Yahoo, tends to see less value in having employees that telecommute, the ability to do so helps to cut down on energy, tires, smog, nerves, etc. Perhaps there’s a happy medium that can still be salvaged.

Tele-meetings: Meetings of any kind are great way to boost egos but can typically be view as a huge waste of time and energy for most folks. Learn how to have ongoing discussions on any topic by first opening up a blog or forum for others to chime in on from time to time. If you must have meetings and you have to travel more than a few footsteps, try first holding them over the internet with everyone seated comfortably at their desks.

Waste Analyst: Assign a waste stream analyst to review your all aspects of your output including packaging and garbage. Understand the kind of materials that enter and leave your offices and warehouse and rate the impact they will have on your environment for as long as they exist. Try to find viable sources or other uses for products you regularly send to the landfill even if it adds a few pennies to your bottom line.
