What Does it Mean to be Considered "Earth Mom Compliant"?
Being in business means you're going to eventually begin to put a strain on the local environment. You'll use more energy, water, create more waste, perhaps even change the air quality in and around your establishment. If you don't have a plan for keeping any wasteful ways in place and harmful practices in check, there's a good chance you're going to begin abusing your local environment. If you're already in business and without a plan, chances are there are endless opportunities for you to make Eco-Friendly improvements. Your first step in becoming Earth Mom Compliant, is to adopt or adapt an Eco-Policy of your own and post the page on your website or profile page.
- Posted Eco-Policy: Simply
stated it means to post or have posted, an environmental policy web page
designed to your standards. A suitably name link to your new page is
placed (by you) on the face page of your website under any one of
several descriptive labels. Once clicked upon, anyone with an interest
in you or your company can easily review the policy and standards you
are keeping to on behalf of the environment. Your label could be
titled, "Sustainability", "Corporate Responsibility", etc. Typically
the link should be grouped in with your Contact Us, About us and other
important face page links.
Optional Activities: Below is a list of added activities you might want to consider as a means of differentiating yourself from others in your competitive field.
- Comprehensive in Scope: Just like any other competitive form of sales and marketing, your Eco-Policy should be clear, concise, detailed and as comprehensive as possible. Expect that it will be compared to the pages of others within your industry. As you accomplish more and more Eco-friendly tasks in and around your household or place of business, begin looking for new challenges.
- Timely Reviews: You should strive to review your policy on a timely basis for ways you can hold you and your company to ever higher green standards. Add a "Last Updated" notation to your profile page to tell others your not just providing lip service.
- Encourage Participation: You should invite your family, friends, co-workers, employees and management staff to participate and make recommendations about changes you could be considering. Announce the initiation of your new Eco-Friendly program to all your clients and investors.
- Documentation: Evidence of your participation in local events such as group pictures, certificates, flyers, etc., should be uploaded to your profile pages.
- Official Oversight: As soon as you feel your business entity is large enough, you should consider creating a part or full time environmental compliance officer position to review policies and oversee the modernization of the plant, equipment, operations and techniques required to further decrease any negative impact your entity may be having on the environment. The more environmentally harmful items you can improve upon or eliminate, the better your bottom line and Eco-Policy results will be reflected.
- Supplier Involvement: To close the back door and drive home this program on a global scale, consider inviting your many suppliers around the world to follow your lead and create and post an Eco-Policy of their own. Don't just take their word for their claims either. Their reflection is your reflection so if they fail to join your level of Eco-compliance, or makes false statements about their ongoing efforts, it's likely to tarnish your image too.
- Note: This is purely a voluntary program and keeping to the representations made in your policy is wholly in your hands. There are no "Compliance Police" who will visit your facility to check up on your activities. There are however representations you should be familiar with that required a large degree of truth and perhaps documentation to have available for backing up your claims.
- Review: Be sure to review FTC Green Guidelinesbefore risking overstatement of any Eco-Policy claims you might make and post.
- Reward: As a reward for becoming "Eco-Compliant", you earn the right to use the Earth Mom Icon as a symbol representing a direct link your Eco-Policy page. Simply add our icon too your other Social Media icons and link the image directly to your page.
